For many, the 2020-2021 school year felt paused by an unseen fermata breath held awaiting the tempo of our pre-COVID lives to resume.
The Summit Music Parents’ Association, founded in 1981, will celebrate 40 years of fulfilling its Purpose to develop interest in, provide encouragement for, and give moral and financial support to the activities of the Summit High School Music Department and other district music programs. SMPA operates solely from the investments of time, talents, and funds provided by our membership of parents and patrons.
For the 2021-2022 year, SMPA is committing over $64,000 to support:

  • Marching Band back on Tatlock, Choral Day at William Patterson University and String Day at Rutgers University.
  • Pledge Day on Oct 24th when we will canvas the Summit community seeking support for the various programs, concerts and special events from our friends and neighbors. The Concession stand staffed by SMPA volunteers bringing football season favorites for all Hilltopper fans.
  • Scholarships for personalized lessons enabling students to improve their skills and for SHS graduates who have contributed to the music programs throughout their high school careers.
  • Audiences enjoying the Holiday Concert, the District Arts, Jazz/CJMEA Band Festival and Choir Festivals, Big Band Dance, Spring Concerts on the Village Green and at SHS, and the Memorial Day Parade and Program.
  • Move up, Move down, and District Honor events for our LCJSMS and Elementary school musicians to understand how continuing their musical pursuits benefit them and can fit into their high school plans.
  • Professional artists for guest and in residence programs to help our students improve their musicianship skills. PPE bell covers needs for elementary, middle, and high school band members.
  • Trips to venues in the greater NJ area where we can showcase the excellence of our music programs and enable students to celebrate with their music group.

We thank Meghan Terry for her leadership during the 2020 – 2021 school year and all those who served as Board or Committee members. The highlights of last school year would not have been possible without their commitment.
What will be your part in continuing SMPA’s purpose?  Join those who have stepped forward to take a role in SMPA. About Us lists open positions on the Executive Board and various Committees where you could lend your expertise and energy. Put your name in to partner with others on a committee or special event at our Volunteer sign-up. Support our music programs across the district with your Donation. Reach out with your questions to myself, our Volunteer Coordinator, or the appropriate Committee chair. I look forward to working with each of you.
a tempo!
